Fairlie is a town in the MacKenzie District of the Canterbury region on the South Island. It has just over 700 inhabitants, 2 pubs, a small supermarket and a hardware shop/postoffice. And a Holiday Park, which is where we will be working for 2 months. The Fairlie Top 10 Holiday Park.
The first few nights we stayed in a small studio kind of place while we started our training. Lots of cleaning in the morning, cabins, units, toilets, showers, kitchen etc. And reception work as well. We were trained by the young German couple who had been working on the campground over summer.
After four days of training the German couple took of on their travels and we started working. During the week we work together with a woman from Fairlie who has been working on the campground for quite a while and in the weekend it’s just us. Basically we are the care takers of the campground so we deal with anything that comes our way. We also moved into our accommodation for the time we are working here, a very old, vintage looking, mouldy caravan from the 70’s. It has a closet and a double bed. That’s about it. So we are truly living the gypsy life, my gypsy dream finally came true! Except that this caravan can’t move anymore, it would probably fall apart if you’d try. Whenever we have a free day we can borrow the campsite car, an old four wheel drive which is a great ride!
The campground itself is absolutely beautiful. It’s not too big and it’s very peaceful. Lovely green trees and grass and you can hear so many different birds chirping away. We are right at the edge of the town so its just a short walk to the mini supermarket and around us are just fields and a river. I have to say, after living in big cities, this is absolutely amazing. The space, the quietness, the dark starry nights without light pollution…
