One of the easiest ways to get around Amsterdam is by tram, unless you have a bicycle of course! When we arrived to Amsterdam Central Station we hopped on a tram which brought us straight to Leidseplein, one of Amsterdam’s main squares. From there it was only a short walk to our hostel, Stayokay Amsterdam Vondelpark.
Our stay at Stayokay Amsterdam Vondelpark
When we walked in we realised this hostel was much bigger than we expected. It comprises three different buildings. The reception area is the centre from where you can reach each of those. After a quick and efficient check-in by one of the friendly receptionists, we were on our way to the C building where our room was located. Through a cool glass corridor we reached the building and soon found our room. We stayed in a twin room but this hostel also has different sized dorms available, so you can choose the type of accommodation you prefer.
We were pleasantly surprised to find a private bathroom with shower in our room, all clean and modern. The rest of the room was also very current and remarkably clean. Simple and basic, but very functional and with everything you need. A closet for your personal belongings, a small table and chairs, central heating and a very funky lamp. Bed linen is also provided when you book a bed or room at Stayokay. After making our beds we decided to explore the rest of Stayokay Amsterdam Vondelpark.
The reception area where you enter the hostel doubles as common room. There are comfy couches in bright colours to lounge around, have a chat with fellow travellers or check your emails on the free wifi. We really liked this area, it’s welcoming and warm and there is plenty of space. If you are keen to have a drink but don’t feel like going out, there is a nice bar in the hostel as well. We enjoyed a beer at the bar and chatted with some other guests before heading out into the city. Although a guest kitchen is not available, you can enjoy a meal in the hostel’s restaurant. We didn’t have dinner at the hostel but the smells coming from the kitchen were delicious!
Of course we were curious to see the other two buildings so we got a little sneak peak of the B building. A modern building with different bright colours on each level and really cool travel quotes painted on the round walls of the stairwell. Very inspirational! We also had a look in the most impressive and oldest building, a beautiful old mansion type house which used to be a “huishoudschool”. A school where young women learned how to cook and clean amongst other things. The breakfast room is located in this building as well as more rooms.
That evening we enjoyed a walk along the canals of Amsterdam until we got too wet and cold from the rain. It was nice to come back to our hostel room and warm up under the duvet. After a good night sleep and a warm shower, we went for breakfast. Again we were pleasantly surprised! We haven’t seen many hostel breakfasts like the one in Stayokay. Not only was there so much to choose from, many of the products were organic! Organic bread and fruit juice, cold cuts with the “better life” quality seal and lots of fair-trade and local produce. Delicious and sustainable! We loved it!
All things considered
We had a fantastic stay at Stayokay Amsterdam Vondelpark, much more than okay! A friendly and welcoming atmosphere, great hygiene standards, an amazing breakfast buffet and a perfect location close to the city centre and right on the border of Amsterdam’s most popular park. We can warmly recommend Stayokay when you are planning a visit to beautiful Amsterdam. Well done Stayokay!
