It’s hot and I see the men and women in their coloured blouses and white trousers sweating as they start forming the base of a “Castell”. Once everyone is in the right position, a signal is given and the small band starts to play. Then people start climbing. A second layer of people is formed and then a third and so on. When the smallest casteller climbs to the top, the people in the crowd hold their breath and all the castellers who are forming the tower are in the deepest concentration. When the small casteller finally reaches the top while being encouraged by the teams coach, she raises one hand with four fingers up. They made it, the tower is complete. The crowd cheers and claps. The music is loud and fast. The small casteller climbs over the top and down the other side of the tower. Once she is safe and sound on the ground, the other layers of people climb down, one after another. Once everyone is back on the ground, the crowd breaks out into applause again. I feel excited as well as relieved that the tower was a success and nobody got hurt.

First, I hear a loud bang. It’s followed by another one and before I know it the street is full of noise, fire and devils. A marching band beats their drums in an ecstatic rhythm that gets me and everyone else on their feet. Amongst the group of devils I see a scary beast. Right in front of me the beast pauses for a moment and spins around in wild circles while sending fire into the crowd. I can’t help but yell out and run further away from it to avoid getting hit by the fire sparks. The devils run and dance and twirl around, holding sticks high above their heads that spit more fire in all directions. People around me are yelling, laughing and dancing with the devils and I wonder what this incredible fire spectacle is!
